| Why Karate For Kids |
Why Karate for Kids?
Because Karate is a fun way for our students to exercise and learn self defense skills, self discipline, and successful life skills that will give them Personal Power they can use through their entire life. With these skills and attitudes they can create the passionate, happy, and success filled life they were born to have.
Karate is not about thugs and bullies, but rather, it is about hard working, well mannered kids striving for goals.
Renee Stivers - Manchester
"UKO is Wonderful! I cannot say enough good about it. It is a great bargain for what is offered. My son has learned such focus, and patience. His penmanship has drastically improved. When I asked him about it, and told him we were proud of him he replied, "I just pretend I'm at Karate, standing at attention stance, and it helps me write better." It is such a warm and caring family that is genuinely concerned about the children and their well being. We love UKO and all it stands for. Thank You!"
Our Program Design
What new students will see are students and teachers working together as a team toward the goal of Black Belt. They will participate in classes that are fun and yet have lots of exercise mixed with precise explanations of Karate techniques to be mastered. They will also hear little 5 minute talks and demonstrations on elements of successful living. Each student will progress through a series of colored belts as they become more proficient. The first lessons are designed to be easily mastered. This allows the student to create a string of "Wins". The winning streak creates Self Confidence. They will learn, "I Can Do It!" and, "I Can Master the Next Challenge". Similarly they will see quick rewards to their first belts. The quick rewards anchor the concept that their Hard Work earned them their goal. As our students go higher in their Karate training, the classes and requirements become progressively more difficult and the rewards become less frequent. With each higher belt they receive, they come to value their accomplishments more. By the time they reach their goal of Black Belt they will realize the belt is just a symbol of the true reward.
The True Reward: They will KNOW they have the Unstoppable Power and Confidence of a Black Belt!
Susan Gehring - Port Orchard
"UKO has been great for our grandchildren. The girls have learned respect, courage, honesty, and helpfullness. They have grown so much mentally in such a short time. They do their chores without reminders and are always helpful to others. They have learned to stay focused. This program is wonderful and I would encourage every parent to try it for their child."
Four Successful Attitudes
Four successful attitudes our Karate training teaches are
- Self Determination
- Taking Responsibility for Your Life
- Self Honesty and
- Courage
David Rockafellow - Port Orchard
"My son's self confidence has greatly improved in excess of my expectations. I am impressed with the skill level of the instructors and how great they are with young kids."
Self Determination
We want our students to determine for themselves what is important in their lives. Many decisions, even small ones, can lead to very different results in life.
- Do you want to get stronger or weaker?
- Do you want to get smarter or dumber?
- Do you want to be healthier of more sick?
- Do you want to be more happy or more sad?
Though these simple questions may have obvious answers, when a student chooses for themselves to be stronger, smarter, healthier, and happier, they naturally take ownership of those decisions and it puts their lives in a positive direction. Having a strong sense for directing their own life is a perspective that helps our students limit the negative influences of peers and it encourages them to think for themselves.
Tim and Janel Mason - Olalla
"All the teachers are excellent! We are very happy with the skills, responsibility and discipline our son has aquired since joining UKO. He's having fun and learning valuable lessons at the same time."
Taking Responsibility for Your Life
Taking responsibility for your life is taking over the steering wheel of your life. You take ownership to say where you are going in life and you make the decisions and choices on how to get there. But, like in our Karate training, we find we must think hard about our decisions if we want to make effective decisions that get us to our goals quickly. With this critical thinking about Karate we find:
- Any fight can cause us serious injury. Even if we win.
- Use Good Manners, because bad manners start unnecessary fights.
- Constantly study and improve to be prepared ahead of time.
- Take care of yourself physically and mentally.
- Take care of your tools.
- Do your best.
- Help others because cooperation is stronger than conflict.
- Develop mental focus and attention. Without it success can not be achieved except by accident.
Arthur Manz - Port Orchard
"I feel that UKO had a major impact in the development of Matthew. Sensei Grout and all the instructors nurture many positive factors in the development of their students. Matthew is proud of all that he has accomplished, but more important, he likes being around the people. I think he feeds off of the positive attitude of Sensei Grout. I know that UKO reinforces the ideals that we try to instill in our home. I trust UKO without any reservations..."
Self Honesty
We want our students to realize it is more valuable to actually be strong and powerful, rather than just look strong and powerful; to be smart, rather than just look smart; to be healthy, rather than to just look healthy; to be honorable, rather than to just look honorable; to have a rich life, rather than to just look rich.
Not being honest, especially with one's self, just builds a false life that easily crumbles like a house of cards. Students learn to use their Courage to honestly see and accept where they stand right now, and, to build success upon that foundation, creating success that isn't rocked by life's difficulties.
Bob and Shannon Richards - Port Orchard
"Some of the aspects we appreciate about UKO include the instruction of responsibility as a way of life, not only in Karate, but in school, at home and in the community. Also, teachers encourage students to set goals for themselves and to work hard to attain those goals. As recently as last week, our son told us that his Sensei said "What ever you do - do your best - at anything you try"... Our family recommends UKO to friends and acquaintances as a positive activity for children."
Courage
Karate is about a warrior's way of living. To live from Courage rather than suffer a life of living from fear. Karate training confronts the student with challenges and fears. Students learn to use courage to overcome the mental habits and fears that work against their goals. Practicing Courage helps students to step past
- Negative emotions that prevent successful progress.
- The fear of asking a teacher a "dumb" question.
- The fear that they are not as good as someone else.
- The fear to try something new.
- The fear thier peers won't like them.
- The fear to talk back to physical and verbal bullies.
- The fear to ask for help.
- The fear to work hard.
- And to step past Failure and Disappointment and have the Courage to Never Give Up.
Joni Stead - Port Orchard
"We think UKO and Karate are great for our kids. It is a wonderful program that challenges individuals, while encouraging them to see their place in the community (Dojo). We recommend the program to many people because we truly believe it is a great place to help children become strong, confident, respectful people."
Give Kids Success.
With these tools, and even more, UKO helps create kids that have strong Personal Power to create successful lives. Strong youth like this also help create a strong and powerful community for everyone. Isn't that what every parent wants for their children?
