Why Sensei Grout Teaches

Sensei Grout had been groomed to become a Doctor. He graduated from the University of Washington with two degrees; one in Chemistry, and the other in Biology. He had placed high on his medical school entrance exam, and had been excepted into graduate school to study radiation biology, when he got absorbed into thoughts that had bugged him throughout his youth. Thoughts that something was not right. But what was it that wasn’t right?

Then it hit him! Trying to help people beat death was an un-win-able battle. People didn’t need to know how to beat death. What they really needed, was to know how to Really Live.

He began experimenting with life; white water rafting, parachute jumping, rock climbing, and something he had always wanted to try – the martial arts.

Sensei Grout went all over the Seattle area looking at many martial schools to decide which one to join. He had seen many Tae Kwondo, Kung-Fu, Judo, Aikido, and Northern Preying Mantis schools. But, when he saw how Shihan Minakami taught Karate, he knew this place was different and was the place to be.

Sensei Grout became passionate about Karate because he found life lessons in his Karate training that were much more powerful than all his previous education combined. Lessons in using courage, self-determination, and the power of never giving up. And, these lessons did not just apply to Karate – They applied to success in all areas of a person’s life.

Sensei Grout loved the Karate training he received, but those were tough days. Practice was brutal, bones were broken, with the occasional student flying through the plate glass window. Sensei Grout saw problems with this training system because it wasn’t really a training system. This old style of training did not create Black Belts as much as it just weeded out and eliminated students who were not Black Belts.

But it can not be denied that this was a strong dojo Sensei Grout belonged to. For the last three years in a row, this dojo had one of their students become the National Champion. But again something didn’t seem quite right about it to Sensei Grout. You see, while each of those three were recognized as national champions, they had terrible, last place lives outside of the dojo. They had not been taught how to apply what they new about success in Karate, to the rest of their lives.

Sensei Grout knew we could do better. The system did not need to be this way. With what he knew about modern training methods, he knew we could teach people who were not Black Belt material, how to become Black Belts. And, we could teach them how to apply the Karate principles so they could generate success in all areas of their lives.

But these were just observations he had that he would take no action on. That is until a personal tragedy had hit his core. Sensei Grout had a daughter who died. And her death, while the most tragic thing he could imagine, taught him the greatest things. Her death showed him how much he loved life and children, and that he should take action toward his goals today, because there is no guarantee of tomorrow.

So this pain, is what spurred Sensei into action; to passionately dedicate himself to develop and continually improve a Karate training system that everyone can safely practice to become a Black Belt and to systematically teach students how to transfer those lessons in success to the rest of their lives.

In this, Sensei continually strives to improve our students, their families, and our whole community with Real Living!
