What People Say About UKO
We think UKO and Karate are great for our kids. It is a wonderful program that challenges individuals, while encouraging them to see their place in the community (dojo). We recommend the program to many people because we truly believe it is a great place to help children become strong, confident, respectful people.

We came across UKO through a self defense class our daughter started taking. I could not say enough positive things about Sensei Grout to my husband and asked him to please go watch how he lead the class. By the time my husband got back home he wanted our whole family to take Karate.

Sensei Grout,
I just wanted to tell you a little story about Jesse.
Jesse started football for the first time this year, when he first started he worked very hard on learning the plays and rules of football. The coach was so impressed with Jesse's speed, balance and endurance that he started Jesse out as running back. Jesse from the beginning was always in first place in the races and the leader in calisthenics. Jesse never complained or walked anywhere on the field he did everything 110% all the time. I started helping out as asst. coach before our first game and Jesse really enjoyed me helping out. We shortly moved Jesse to QB and we where able to add several more plays to our arsenal. Jesse scored 5 touchdowns as running back and 2 touchdowns as QB and he just impressed every person who’s seen him play. By the end of the season Jesse ended up with MVP and a nice beautiful trophy.
I believe that your discipline and hard work has truly helped both my sons in life.
Thank you for all you have done for my family.

It’s just that we LOVE UKO. We wouldn’t be here for almost 10 years if we didn’t. They’re great people. It’s a great school. And the kids…. It’s something they’ll remember the rest of their lives.

The UKO After School program was very influential for my daughter. She became more independent and more willing to help. This program taught more than just discipline in karate.

I would greatly recommend UKO Karate to parents and schools. My son has always done well with his school work but was lacking confidence in himself and courage to try new things. Since doing the after school program he is extremely polite at home and to his sister. His teacher has noticed he is trying even harder in class and even trying to read books above his grade level. The instructors work very closely with the students and teach them how to believe in themselves.

UKO has been an extremely positive experience for our entire family. Our kids are learning valuable life lessons about focus, courage and having a ‘never quit’ attitude. Most importantly, they are having so much fun!

My Son, Matthew, had a positive attitude about the UKO After School Karate Program. He looked forward to each session. He really enjoyed the lessons that his teacher taught him and the class. He would share what he learned with our family. He was also very positive about doing his homework, helping around the house, and helping with his younger brother and sister.

Dear Sensei Grout,
Ossu !
This past Sat. you presented me with my Brown Belt. For just recently returning to class and unable to attend as often as needed, I cannot tell you nor express how excited I was when I realized I had passed the test. I can honestly say that for the first time since starting Karate, I have never been more relaxed than I was during this past test and realizing that by itself, was a great achievement for me. So I was very pleased with accomplishing that and left class content, yet knowing in order to progress, I had to work much harder and practice, practice, practice!! Your trust in me has brought me to a new level of confidence in myself . I am so very thankful for you, Sensei Record and Sensei Roland. If you ever wonder if you are making a difference in anyone's life , YOU DO !
With my heartfelt gratitude and thankfulness,
Christine Cylkowski

Proud to be a student at UKO
I feel that UKO had a major impact in the development of Matthew. Sensei Grout and all the instructors nurture many positive factors in the development of their students. Matthew is proud of all that he has accomplished, but more important, he likes being around the people. I think he feeds off of the positive attitude of Sensei Grout. I know that UKO reinforces the ideals that we try to instill in our home. I trust UKO without any reservations.....

I think the program helps teach self-control and discipline, along with manners. They need all the extra guidance they can get. Learning to be model citizens and strong individuals is very important for their futures. Being able to focus in school and learn to be more helpful is greatly appreciated at home.

UKO is Wonderful! I cannot say enough good about it. It is a great bargain for what is offered. My son has learned such focus, and patience. His penmanship has drastically improved. When I asked him about it, and told him we were proud of him he replied, “I just pretend I’m at Karate, standing at attention stance, and it helps me write better.” It is such a warm caring family that is genuinely concerned about the children and their well being. We love UKO and all it stands for. Thank You!

Joey’s really come a long way because with cerebral palsy a lot of kids would tease him. So he developed a habit of attitude. Sensei Grout doesn’t let him use his cerebral palsy as an excuse for not getting it on his own. He just treats him like any other kid and that’s why I think Joey likes it here so much.

I think the UKO After School Karate Program is an excellent learning tool for children. The program taught my daughter valuable skills that she will continue to use throughout her life. I hope that they will continue to offer these kinds of programs in the schools.

Some of the aspects we appreciate about UKO include the instruction of responsibility as a way of life, not only in Karate, but in school, at home and in the community. Also, teachers encourage students to set goals for themselves and to work hard to attain those goals. As recently as last week, our son told us that his Sensei said “What ever you do - do your best - at anything you try”.... Our family recommends UKO to friends and acquaintances as a positive activity for children.

My daughter is a 2nd grader at EPO and was involved in the UKO After School Karate Program and she loved it. She always looked forward to Monday and Wednesday and her self-esteem and manners improved a great deal while taking these classes. Her and I are both sad to see the program end. She has helped out more around the house and a lot more respectful toward everyone!

Dear Sensei,
I never knew how to defend myself, And I always got harassed. But ever since I joined UKO people have been treating me normal. I always thought I would never be able to stand up for myself. If it wasn’t for UKO I would have never been able to. I’m getting closer to black belt, And I’m learning more each day.
UKO has taught me a lot in the last 10 months, and there is more to come, I’m always ready to learn more. A true karate master teaches in discipline, spirit, manners, and never attacks someone else. I have never heard of any other dojo that teaches karate like you. Every one else believes in fighting and attacking.
Day after day I am still getting closer to black belt, I know one of these days I’m going to achieve my black belt. And I am planning to make it to at least third degree black belt. And then I’m going to quit, but that does not mean I’m not going to come and visit UKO again, and help out if needed. Thank You Sensei for training me in the martial arts.
Sincerely Travis Reiter (9)
Matt has enjoyed this program and it has helped him with patience and is being a better listener at home. He thinks about things before he reacts and try’s to go out of his way to be kind in situations he normally would be agitated with! It has also helped his self confidence. I think this is a great program of self dicipline.

UKO has given Jasmine something we couldn’t give her. It has changed her life forever. We feel strongly for those individuals that have a special needs (child) and want to accomplish goals within their means. This program allows the opportunity to do so. Whether your disability is physical, mental, or emotional, UKO supports and allows one to feel successful.

I signed Devyn up for the program hoping to help him with his self esteem and help him be more self assured. He has learned that and much more. Now when he’s picked on when playing with friends. He chooses either to come inside or to let them know he’s not happy. Before he would always just cry! Also he is more independent in his daily activities.

Krata isn’t about kicking and punching it is about prserveran (perseverance). It helps my family to keep then safe. I promise to always try my best. And help my family every day. I will never use krata moves on my brother sister or mom and dad. I will try to get smarter and smarter every day.

I think the UKO After School Karate Program has helped Patience to take a little more responsibility at home. She really seems to enjoy the classes and I was real impressed with the patience that the young man that was instructing her up at the gym is able to maintain, as hyper-active as she is, he is able to keep her attention. I hope these classes will help her to mellow out.

Karate is very important to Nicole she loves it. Going to Karate has helped her a great deal with her ability to be focused and to have self discipline and self control. It has also helped her to have self confidence which was one of her biggest obstacles. Since Nicole started karate two years ago she has grown tremendously and we want to thank you for the role that you have played in helping her to achieve that growth.

The UKO After School Karate Program has been great for our grandchildren. The girls have learned respect, courage, honesty, and helpfulness. They have grown so much mentally in such a short time. They now do chores without reminders and are always helpful to others. They have learned to stay focused. This program is wonderful and I would encourage every parent to try it for their children. I cannot say enough about it.”

It has been pure pleasure to watch how Riley has progressed in just one year. He keeps up with all the push ups, can manage more of the sit ups. As I watched him run and leap over the rope and cushions the other day, it was amazing to think that this is the same kid who slowly walked up to the bag, his fingers in his mouth, and then sort of tapped it with one hand a year ago. Dave thank you so much for that special spontaneous session he had with you. It thrilled him, and he glowed with pride as he told his mom about it. Blessings to you both, to your family and upon all your endeavors.

I think concentrating on the mental and moral aspects that go into the complete karate life style is an excellent lead-in at our schools. It gives the parents and teachers an extra tool in their child’s development while offering a peek into the true lessons of karate, thereby giving the positiveness of karate an exposure not normally afforded and we all know that knowledge is Power! Thanks for everything.

A Story By A UKO Student
IF ONLY….
“I can’t believe it is finally my birthday!” Veronika screeched as she was rolling down Sk8 Town’s smooth skating rink. It was her tenth birthday and she went to Sk8 Town for her party. Everyone she knew was there. She stepped out of the rink and went to the table. She sat down and took a break. Talking and laughter could be heard all around her. Most of it was mainly coming from the skating rink. Suddenly the loud speaker said “It is time to announce our birthday guest today!” the speaker boomed. She smiled and rolled out to the skating rink once more.
“Happy birthday to Veronika Dennison!” the speaker Roared. Her friends and family started screaming things like, “Go Veronika!” and, “Happy birthday!” Veronika smiled and started to skate around the rink once more. One of her friends rolled up to her and said, “ Happy b-day Veronika! High five!” Veronika raised her hand and gave her friend the strongest high five she had ever done in her life!
“Oh no!” Veronika screeched. She had done the high five so hard and fast that she lost her balance and started to fall backwards! As fast as she could, she put her hands in front of her like she was taught in karate, instead of trying to catch herself. She fell on her back on the skate rink. It did not hurt her too bad. But luckily, she knew karate. She remembered her Sensei telling the class the proper way to fall. If she had tried to catch herself, she probably would have broken her wrist!
Based on a true story about me. Unfortunately I did not know enough karate at that time and I did try to catch myself. I ended up breaking both of my bones in my wrist.

Why He Drives 45 Minutes to UKO
I knew I always wanted to learn Karate, but was unsure about where to go. One of my classmates at school recommended UKO to me. Since she has been attending UKO for over 7 years, and was always speaking so highly of them, I figured I would give it a try.
I remember the first day as a flood of information about techniques I’ve never heard of before. It seemed like a daunting task just to remember it all. However, I saw this as a challenge and since I’m a very competitive person, I accepted it.
This was not just a challenge of physical strength or ability, but a test of mental strength. In my mind every class is a test to prove to Sensei that I am ready and willing to learn more.
My only regret is that I didn’t join earlier. It is amazing how much effort is put in by all the staff at UKO. Sensei Grout really displays his care and devotion to each and every student.
UKO is truly a one-of-kind establishment. It is worth it to me, even though I have to drive 45 minutes to get there. I cannot imagine a better way for anyone to invest their earnings. The quality of teaching at UKO is worth every cent.

I have often been asked by parents if my children enjoy coming to UKO. I have stated that yes my children do enjoy their classes and the instructors are very dedicated to the development of a strong well balanced individual. And that they are great with children under their care. Sensei Grout makes the classes fun but informative for the younger students. The students learn a great deal, not only to be strong on the outside but to be strong on the inside and to respect themselves for who they are.

I just wanted to let you know how impressed we are with your organization. It is so different from other clubs and sports. You make it personal and inspiring for Ryan and he loves going to class. The periodic letters to Ryan to let him know how he is doing are great - and he loved the Spring sleepover. He is learning respect and control and he loves doing the karate moves. Anyway, I hope you get enough feedback to know you are making a difference. You are both very talented in what you do and we are so glad that you are in Port Orchard!

I thought it was great for my kids. My daughter felt it helped her learn to focus a bit more and they also learned the importance of family team work and to take care of themselves. It also helped to build some more confidence in my children. I would highly recommend this program for other schools and hope it is offered here at Manchester again.
